Alaska High School: Regional Champions Advance with PBs

Regional Meets are here, and athletes are throwing down personal best marks at the right time. Here is all that you missed last week for the Alaska track and field.

Boys

Ansel Alexander of West Anchorage High School dipped under 50 seconds in the 400m as he won the Region IV Championships. The senior ran 49.40, improving his personal best and state rank to #1.

In the short hurdles at the Region IV Championships, Matthew Jackson of East Anchorage High School took the boys' title. The junior set a new personal best of 15.31 in the prelims, returning to win the final in 15.32. Jackson also finished 3rd in the 300m hurdles with a season's best 43.09, and is your Alaskan leader in the 110m hurdles.

Your state leader in the 300m hurdles is Malachi Coski of Dimond High School. At the Region IV Championships, Coski achieved a new personal best in the event, running 41.11. The senior also ran a season's best 15.93 in the 110m hurdles to take second overall.

Junior Tavarius Wrice of Dimond High School won the boys' high jump at the Region IV Championships . Wrice improves his previous best mark by 3 inches, clearing 6-5 and improving to #1 in the state for high jump.

At the Region 3 Championships, Nolan Garner of Palmer High School won both the boys' shot put and discus with lifetime bests. The senior threw 44-1 in the shot put and 157-1 in the discus. Palmer is the #2 discus thrower in the state this season.

Girls

In the girls' shot put, we saw new top 3 state performances at the regional championships this past weekend. At the top, Jieaya Siatini continued her perfect shot put season at the Region 3 Championships , winning the competition in a personal best of 41-2.25. The senior from Anchorage Christian High School currently leads the state in both throwing events.

Kendall Barnett of West Anchorage High School improved her state-leading 1600m and 3200m performances, winning both events at the Region IV Championships. The junior clocked a personal record of 5:06.32 and 11:22.22.

In the 400m dash at the Region 3 Championships, Leila Petersen claimed the crown for Palmer High School. The junior ran a season's best 58.97 as she crossed the line. She also ran 25.89 in the 200m to take the title in both events. Petersen ranks #2 in the state in the 400m.

At the Region IV Championships, Emilia Zych took first in the 300m hurdles. The senior from Service High School improves her personal best to 46.90 and sits at #2 in Alaska. Zych also set a new personal best in the 100m hurdles with a 3rd place finish.

Ariela Garvey of Homer High School finished runner-up in the girls' 800m dash and won the 1600m and 3200m at the Region 3 Championships. Garvey achieved three new personal bests of 2:24.36, 5:33.61, and 12:00.68.
