Alaska High School Track & Field: Early May Highlights

Boys

At the Kodiak/MCCA/BHS Tri Meet, Gabriel Koehler took down the field in the 800m. The senior from Kodiak High School crossed the line in a new personal best of 2:02.15, which currently ranked #3 in the state over the 2-lap race.

The long jump state leader for Alaska is Dimond High School's Corde Bates. At the 2026 Anchorage Invite, the senior jumped an impressive personal best of 22-6 to take the victory. He's the only long jumper in the state to jump beyond the 21 ft mark in this event.

Over at the long jump at the Kodiak/MCCA/BHS Tri Meet, Joshua Woko of Anchorage Christian High School claimed the victory. The senior leaped a lifetime best of 20-10.25 to keep his win streak alive and move into the #3 spot in the event for Alaska.

Matthew Varney improved his state-leading 400m mark with a lifetime best at the 2026 Anchorage Invite. The senior from Chugiak High School crossed the line in 50.25 to claim the victory.

East Anchorage High School's Katahdin Staples won all three distance events at the 2026 Anchorage Invite. He posted new PBs of 2:06.65 in the 800m and 9:27.13 in the 3200m, and the junior currently leads the state in the 3200m. Staples also won the 1600m in 4:28.83 at the same meet to round out the triple.

Girls

The Kodiak/MCCA/BHS Tri Meet shot put champion is Anchorage Christian High School's Kate Matthews. The senior threw a lifetime best 33-6 last weekend to take the victory and has improved to #7 in the event.

We saw the state's top-5 girls 3200m marks at the 2026 Anchorage Invite, with Kendall Barnett leading the charge. The junior from West Anchorage High School clocked a lifetime best of 11:24.00 to secure the win and the top time in the state this season.

In the 400m, Anna Green of South Anchorage High School leads the state by over a second in the event. At the 2026 Anchorage Invite, Green recorded a PR of 58.12 to claim the victory. The senior also won the 200m in 26.33 and was the runner-up in the 100m in 12.83.

Junior Nevaeh Watkins continues her success on the track and the field. From Dimond High School, Watkins won two events at the 2026 Anchorage Invite - she ran a PB in the prelims of the 100m hurdles in 15.37 before going on to win the final. And she later set a season's best in the high jump with a clearance of 5-3. She currently leads Alaska in both events.

In the discus ring, Emilee Anderson of South Anchorage High School took the title at the 2026 Anchorage Invite in new a lifetime best of 121-2 to take the win, and is 1 of only 2 athletes in the state to throw over 120 ft this season.
