Things don't usually heat up (metaphorically) for Alaska outdoor track and field until the first weekend in May, and this past week was no exception. We saw numerous lifetime bests across the board. Check out what athletes excelled in early May.
Boys
Matthew Varney ran a season's best in the 400m at the Quad 6: Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet. The senior from Chugiak High School crossed the line first in 50.84, leading Alaska boys in the event.
Dimond High School's Tavarius Wrice also took a win at the Quad 6: Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet, his coming in the boys' high jump. The junior cleared a lifetime best 6-2 and is currently tied for the top mark in the state.
At the Sitka High Invitational, Zander Sudnikovich-Reming took the boys' long jump title. From hometown Sitka High School, Sudnikovich-Reming sealed the victory with a lifetime best 19-6 jump, improving to #15 in the state as a freshman.
In the 200m at the Quad 6: Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet, senior Malachi Coski of Dimond High School broke the tape with a new personal best. Coski clocked a 22.68 to seal the win and is ranked #3 in the 200m.
Sophomore Finn Larsen of Chugiak High School won the Quad 6: Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet triple jump and claimed a new personal record. Larsen leaped 41-5.75 to take first and advanced to #4 in the state for the horizontal jump.
Girls
Eagle River's Naomi Hopkins won the Quad 5:Bartlett, Eagle River, South, East triple jump. With a new personal best of 15-4.25, the freshman claimed the title and improved to #10 in the event for all of Alaska in the process.
Attia Braham of Service High School also recorded a new lifetime best this past weekend. At the Quad 6: Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet, Brahman clocked a 1:00.36 in the 400m to place first. The junior is the top-ranked class of 2027 400m-specialist in the state, and ranked #4 overall.
In the distance events, Kendall Barnett of West Anchorage High School took a pair of wins at the Quad 6:Chugiak, Dimond, Service, West Meet. The junior clocked a PR of 11:42.67 in the 3200m and later dipped under 2:20 for the first time in the 800m, setting a new PR of 2:19.40. She now ranks among the top 3 in Alaska in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m.
NB Gatwech of East Anchorage High School won the high jump at the Quad 5:Bartlett, Eagle River, South, East Meet. The sophomore cleared 5-0 to set a lifetime best and is tied for #3 in the state.
At the Quad 5:Bartlett, Eagle River, South, East Meet, Anna Green of South Anchorage High took victories in the 100m, 200m, and 400m. Green clocked 12.75 in the 100m to tie her season's best, 27.11 in the 200m, and 1:01.87 in the 400m.
