FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Ten of the Alaska Nanook skiers, including four men and six women, have been named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's cross country academic all-conference team.
A total of 69 student-athletes (31 men, 38 women) were honored from the GNAC's 10 member institutions.
Seniors
Marit Rjabov (Voru, Estonia/Psychology, 3.92) and
Heather Edic (Fairbanks, Alaska/Civil Engineering, 3.81) garnered their third straight recognition, while five more Nanooks were on the team for a second time.
The two-time honorees include junior
Tux Seims (Homer, Alaska/Civil Engineering, 3.58) on the men's team and senior
Megan Thompson (Fairbanks, Alaska/Music Education, 3.93) and juniors
Alyson McPhetres (Chugiak, AK/Geological Engineering, 3.90),
Heidi O'Connor-Brook (Whitehorse, Y.T./Music Education, 3.70) and
Raphaela Sieber (Vöhrenbach, Germany/Business Administration, 3.77).
Earning a spot on the all-conference academic team for the first time were senior
Lex Treinen (Anchorage, Alaska/Northern Studies, 3.78), junior
Andrew Arnold (Fairbanks, Alaska/Petroleum Engineering, 3.25) and sophomore Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration, 3.33).
“I've said it before and it's the truth: I am very proud of our team members,” said head coach
Scott Jerome. “They obviously know how to get the work done in the classroom; they are planning for successful futures and it shows. They represent our university extremely well.”
To qualify for the academic team athletes must have a minimum GPA of at least 3.20 and competing in at least their second season at their respective universities.
