With action picking up in the region as well as most of the nation there is much to cover this week.   A number of records fell during the course of the week and we’ll with them.   At the Tracy Walters meet in Spokane Kai Wilmot of North Central .   Although the Walters is a young meet its record of 14:57 by Andrew Gardner, a two-time Foot Locker finalist, was impressive but on Saturday Wilmot Kai zipped across the finish line in a time well before the official mark and was credited with 14:44.  The clocking is all the more stunning for Wilmot is only a junior.   In his wake were John Dressel of Mt. Spokane & Austin Oser of Kamiakin, who waged their own private duel, which Dressel won, although both were credited with versions of 15:31.  Fourth went to Tanner Anderson of NC, who led a duo of team mates, who included Oliver Reed & Keith Williams, who had an off day for him.      On the girls’ side Katie Knight showed that her health issues are behind her with a fast time of 17:47.  Although the time is a bit off her previous course record of 17:41, it was a strong time for this early in the season.   In her wake were a pair of State champions with Oregon’s Paige Rice getting the nod over Idaho’s Emily Hamlin, who ran 18:38 & 18:43 respectively.   Ellen Patterson, like Rice representing St. Mary’s Academy,  placed fourth in 18:48 and Jesuit’s Ellie Kallgren edged Coeur d’ Alene ’s Josie Brown.  It is a measure of the quality of the race for, although it is still relatively small, the field included Rice, who won the Wilsonville Invitational and Brown, who won the Post Falls Invite.  Not bad!  Dylan Hite of Jesuit, Lacey Conner of SMA, Elise Tello of Eisenhower & Taylor Moscoe of the Crusaders rounded out the top ten.   The team race saw the North Central guys four of the top six places to make a victory almost inevitable, while Knight was their only representative for the young ladies.   The Jesuit girls topped St. Mary’s Academy, while CDA earned third.

The Sehome Invitational is another young meet but it is run at a distance of two miles.  After the weekend of the effort of Amy-Eloise Neale it will appear that that invite’s record has lasted for years.   Neale won the senior division with a time of 10:54, which gave her a solid margin of victory over her Glacier peak team mate Katie Bianchini, whose time of 11:31 was also under the meet record.  Brittany Gappa came in third in the senior race with a time (11:48), which would have easily won the other female divisions. Sally Larson placed fourth in 11:52.   The other divisional champions for the ladies were Emily Pettis for the sophomores (12:10), RaynJoy Norton for the juniors with 12:36 & Emma Janousek of Arlington, who led the freshmen with 12:46.   The premier boys’ race was in the senior division, where Patrick Gibson of Squalicum defeated Poli Balthazar of Aberdeen by two seconds with his time of 9:55.  Nathan Wadhwani had the third best time of all division with 10:01, as he outlasted Tom Bradley by a second.    Squalicum ’s Chris Fredlund led the juniors with 10:28, while Kirby Overman of Sehome topped the sophomores with 10:34.   Sam Gillman of Bellingham was the fastest of the freshmen with his time of 11:30.

We already reported on action from the Run-A-Ree at Hudson ‘s Bay but it is worth reiterating that Alexa Efraimson ran 18:00 to defeat Alexa Fuller of Union, who ran 18:42.  With 51 previous editions it is hard to say what the record was but Priscilla Timmons’ time of 18:18 from 2010 was the fastest time in years.   Mark Tedder of Battle Ground ran 15:40, which easily claimed the victory over Andrew Kaler of Camas & Colby Gilbert of Skyview.

Allie Ostrander rolled to victory at the Palmer Invitational with a fine time of 17:42.  No surprise there but Audrey Michaelson of Colony changed tactics by running well off the pace before closing in a rush.  Her time of 18:43 is most promising on a course that is hardly easy.  Hope Steffenson (18:54) of Kenai & Megan Kubichek (19:06) of Lathrop earned third & fourth.  Brooke Lizotte challenged Ostrander early but paid a price as she faded to fifth.   Gabby Karas

Gabriella Karas is only an eighth grader, yet is the defending State champion in AA.   On Saturday to took an almost immediate lead in the “Rumble in the Jungle” meet outside of Louisville.   The course begins with a loop around the soccer field but once completed the runners pass the point, where they originally turned but go straight past.   Gabriella mistakenly turned once again and was forced to retrace her steps, which cost her a good 20-30 seconds.  In spite of that handicap, she was able to catch and then pull away from her challengers, as she won with a time of 19:15.  Maddox Patterson of Sayre (19:28) & Caroline Grogan of Oldham County(19:29) collected second & third & were the only other runners to break twenty minutes on the Creasey Mahan nature Preserve course, which was made quite slick by a storm the night before the race.   The boys’ race witnessed an early three-way duel between Conor Sheryak of St. Xavier, John Spencer of Lafayette & Nicholas Waltman of Sayre.   Waltman fell off the pace in the third mile but Spencer & Sheryak remained so close until the very end that it was difficult to get a picture of both.  Down the stretch Sheryak found a reserve and pulled away down the stretch to gain a two second margin over his rival.  The winning time was 16:25.  Max Mudd of Xavier finished 4th in 16:53 and Xavier won the team race over North Oldham 34 to 51.  The end result is misleading, because Xavier had four of their normal top seven runners miss the race due to SAT Exams.
