Women's Cross Country Takes Crown At Hawaii-Hilo Invitational

- Senior Theresia Schnurr ran away with a bronze finish but the Alaska Nanooks struck gold as they took three of the top five spots at the Hawaii-Hilo Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning at the Naniloa Volcano Golf Course on the Big Island of Hawaii. Alaska's men edged Hawaii Pacific for second on the day behind top-10 finishes from Tyler Kornfield and Andrew Arnold.

The 10th-ranked women's team beat out 8th-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawaii for the team title 37-43, after Schnurr and teammates Raphaela Sieber and Crystal Pitney finished third in 18 minutes 25 seconds, fourth in 19:23 and fifth in 19:26, respectively.

Running away with the women's top two spots were BYU-Hawaii's Lacey Lynn krout in 18:21 and Katherine Buxton in 18:24.

Sophomore Heather Edic (19:40) and junior Jana Benedix (19:41) crossed the finish line 11th and 12th to give the Blue and Golda six-point margin of victory over the Seasiders in the hunt for the women's crown.

The McPhetres sisters, Alyson and Kryston, rounded out the Nanooks represented in the women's event and finished 17th (19:55) and 22nd (21:00) overall.

Rounding out the team standings for the women's event were Hawaii-Manoa (61), HPU (92), Chaminade (146) and the host Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans (153).

On the men's side, Alaska finished second out of four teams with 55 points. BYU-Hawaii won the team title handily with a podium sweep (1-2-3) and five finishers in the top seven for 19 points. The HPU Sea Warriors followed the Nanooks with 64 points and the Silverswords were fourth with 91.

Spencer Deavila won the four-mile race with a time of 20:51, while his teammates, Justin Royer (21:10) and Daniel Eldridge (21:12) followed his lead.

Senior Tyler Kornfield was Alaska's top finisher, completing the course in 21:28, while sophomore Andrew Arnold (21:54) and rookie Ludwig Schott (21:56) were seperated by just a second to take ninth and 11th, respectively.

Sophomore Tux Seims (14th in 22:47) and rookie Jonas Loffler (15th in 23:12) were also among Alaska's top five finishers, while senior Erik Soderstrom (21st, 23:44) and junior Lars Arneson (22nd, 23:08) completed the list of Nanooks' who participated.

Next up for both squads is the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships set for Saturday, October 22 at 9 a.m. in Yakima, Wash.
