FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanooks women's cross country team set the gold standard Thursday night winning their meet against the visiting Seattle Pacific University Falcons and the Montana State Billings University Yellowjackets. Sophomore Heather Edic was the Nanooks top finisher of the day, taking third overall in the women's six kilometer run with a course time of 23 minutes and 19.2 seconds in the opening race of the Alaska Nanooks Cross Country Invitational at the West Ridge Trails on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

SPU's Natty Plunkett was the race winner with a course-time of 22:59.5. MSUB's Whtney Mickelsen was second overall in 23:09.9.

The Alaska women placed five finishers in the top 11 (3-4-7-8-11) en route to the lowest and best team score of 33 points, followed by SPU with 42 points and MSUB with 51. Junior Crystal Pitney finished just after Edic in fourth (23:19.2), while senior Theresia Schnurr (7th, 23:42.3), junior Raphaela Sieber (8th, 24:20.4) and sophomore Alyson McPhetres (11th, 24:45.6) rounded out the scorers for the Blue and Gold.

Also crossing the finish for Alaska was the first-year McPhetres, Kryston (25:02.7), junior Marit Rjabov (26:06.0), Heidi O'Conner-Brook (26:23.3) and Megan Thompson (29:29.0).

On the men's side, MSUB's Brian Potter ran away with the victory, tackling the eight kilometer course in 26 minutes and 16.4 seconds. SPU took the next three spots behind solid races from Jacob Wahlenmaier (26:37.3), Will Harrison (26:37.8) and Jordon Wolfe (26:52.6). Alaska's junior Tyler Kornfield rounded out the men's top five finishers with a course time of 27:04.5.

Nanook sophomore Andrew Arnold was second for the Blue and Gold in 27:48.2 (9th), while Ludwig Schott (28:03.0), Tux Seims (28:03.6) and Erik Soderstrom (28:09.6) followed.

The men were further represented on the trail by Jonas Loeffler, Stefan Hajdukovich, Kenneth Brewer, Nolin Ainsworth. Lars Arneson, Wyatt Mayo, Ian Wilkinson and Joeseph Dillon.

All three teams return to the trails on Saturday morning for a pair of 4k sprint races. The men's race starts at 10 a.m. followed by the women's event at 10:30 a.m.
