Alaska Runners Take Second At Chamindade Invite

OAHU, HI— Raphaela Seiber and Tyler Kornfield were the top female and male finishers for the Alaska Nanooks women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, who both finished second out of five teams at the Chaminade Invitational held at Central Oahu Regional Park Saturday. Brigham Young University Hawaii took top honors in both races.

Seiber was the top Nanook in both races, with a second place finish in the women's 5K race. She crossed the tape at  18:43.40, just under 12 seconds behind the race winner and BYUH's Frida Aspnaes' (18:31.75). Sophomore Theresia Shnurr was the next to cross in 19:16.40 and junior Jana Benedix was eighth with a course time of 19:42.42.


The Seasiders, despite not placing a runner in the top three individually, won the team title by twelve points over the Nanooks, 34-46, by placing five runners in the top ten.

Other Nanooks to finish were Crystal Pitney, 16th in 20:15.62, Heather Edic, 17th in 20:20.44, Kinsey Laine 19th in 20:22.69 and Aurelia Korthauer, 23rd in 20:51.48.

Hawaii Pacific took third in the team competition with 89 points with Hawaii fourth with 98 points and UH-Hilo fifth with 168 points.  Host Chaminade had only four runners finish and did not qualify for the team scoring.

On the men's side, Kornfield was the fourth runner to cross the finish line after knocking out the 8k course in 26:33.80. David Norris was the next Nanook to cross, placing 15th overall in 27:48.25, and he was followed by teammate Andrew Arnold in 28:12.09.

Lars Arneson (21st, 28:26.80), Erik Soederstroem (22nd, 28:48.23), John Parry (27th, 29:36.25) and Cody Priest (30th, 29:51.38) rounded out Alaska's finishers.28) Cody Priest 29:51.

BYU's men racked up 20 points with all five of its scoring runners finishing in the top eight, while the Nanooks edged HPU for second place by a point, 78-79. Hawaii-Hilo was fourth with 106 points and Chaminade was fifth with 110.

The Blue and Gold return to Fairbanks where they will train for the next three weeks in preparation for the Pre-Regional meet on October 23.
