Alaska Women Open Running Season With Win, Men Take Second

The Alaska Nanooks men's and women's cross country teams made the most of opening the 2010 season on their home turf as the women proved victorious and the men placed second in a three-way dual meet with Northwest Nazarene and Seattle Pacific Thursday afternoon at the Alaska Nanook Cross Country Invitational.

Sophomore Raphaela Sieber was the top Nanook in the women's 6 kilometer race, finishing second in 22 minutes, 52.6 seconds to SPU's Natty Plunkett (22:30.3).

The Alaska women were impressive, placing all five of their scorers among the top eight, while SPU amassed 42 points, followed by NNU in third with 63.

Joining Sieber in the top 10 for the Nanooks were junior Theresia Schnurr, who was fourth in 23:17.5, sophomore Heather Edic, who took sixth in 24:05.2, followed by Jana Benedix in seventh (24:22.2), and Aurelia Korthauer in eighth (24:31.2).

Sophomore Tyler Kornfield paced the men's team to second place after finishing fourth on the 8K course in 27:12.6. Northwest Nazarene, led by overall winner Barak Watson (26:30.0), won with 25 points, while Alaska had 48 and Seattle Pacific finished with 51.

Newcomer David Norris rounded out the Nanooks top-10 finishers as he finished ninth in 27 minutes and 46 seconds.

All three teams will take to the West Ridge Trails again on Saturday for a pair of 4K races. The women begin at 10 a.m. AKT, followed by the men at 10:45.
