Nanooks Kick Off 2010 Cross Country Slate At Home

FAIRBANKS, AK – Alaska Nanooks head cross country coach Scott Jerome announced the men's and women's 2010 schedule, which features a pair of home meets and four road competitions, on Wednesday.

The Blue and Gold will take to the trails for the first time on September 2, when they host Great Northwest Athletic Conference foes Seattle Pacific and Northwest Nazarene at Birch Hill. All three teams will reunite on Sept. 4 for the final races of the weekend.

“We have a solid schedule,” said Jerome. “We are excited to have two home meets especially for the number of local runners we have on the team. It should be a good opportunity for families and local supporters to come out and see the team.”

“It's also nice to have two teams that are competitive in the conference come up; that should be a good indicator of where we stack up.”

Alaska will make its way back to Hawaii for the second straight season, visiting Oahu on Sept. 25 for a meet hosted by Chaminade. The event will feature other Division II competitors such as Hawaii Pacific, BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo.

Three weeks later the Nanooks will race in Bellingham at the pre-regional meet hosted by Western Washington on Oct. 16. The site holds historic significance for Alaska, as it was the same course where former Nanook All-American Pavla Havlova raced her way to the program's first individual GNAC Championship in 2005

.
On Nov. 6 the Nanook harriers will lace on their shoes for the GNAC Championships, hosted by Central Washington in Ellensburg just two weeks before they close out the 2010 campaign at the NCAA Regional Meet on Nov. 20 in Bellingham.

“The way we have the meets are spread out this year will actually be better than what we've had in the past,” Jerome added. “There are fewer races bunched up together and more opportunities for training.”
