Women finish 7th, Men 8th at GNAC Meet

YAKIMA, WA - Alaska men's and women's cross country came up short of their season goal at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, as they finished eighth and seventh, respectively, Saturday at the Apple Ridge Run course.

Sophomore Theresia Schnurr (Buhlertal, Germany) led all runners as the only top-20 finisher, crossing 17th in the women's 6k race in 22:33, while freshman Tyler Kornfield (Anchorage, AK) was the top runner for the Alaska men (37th overall) turning in a time of 27:36 on the 8k course.

In the women's race, Seattle Pacific's Jessica Pixler (21:03) won the GNAC's individual title for the fourth consecutive year, while Alaska Anchorage's Marko Cheseto (24:50) was the men's champion. Taking the team titles were the UAA women and the Western Washington men. Alaska's women finished the meet with 196 points, while the men totaled 219.

Following Schnurr, Jana Bennedix (Fairbanks, AK) (24:32) was the next to cross the finish line for the Blue and Gold, while Heather Edic (Fairbanks, AK) (24:45), Maria Stensland (25:02), Aurelia Korthauer (26:22), Marit Rjabov (Voru, Estonia) (26:43), and Rebecca Konieczny (West Yellowstone, MT) (28:49) rounded out the scoring runners.

On the men's side, Ray Sabo (Whitehorse, Yukon) (27:50) was the Nanooks' second best runner on the day, followed by Mitch Chandler (Chattaroy, WA) (28:12), Sam Tilly (Rainbow Valley, AK) (28:25), Einar Often (Tynset, Norway)(28:34), Lars Arneson (Soldontna, AK) (29:46), and Henri Soom (Tartu, Estonia) (32:34).

The teams will now prepare for the NCAA West Region in San Francisco Nov. 7.
