Ten Nanook Runners Named To GNAC All-Academic Team

FAIRBANKS, AK – Ten men and women representing the Alaska Nanook cross country teams were named to the 2009 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Cross Country Academic All-Conference Team announced Thursday. A total of 73 student-athletes – 23 men and 50 women – were honored.

A conference-best seven Nanooks were named to the men's team, while three women made the cut for the women's team.

The group of outstanding student-athletes was led by sophomore and first-time all-academic team selection Theresia Schnurr (Buhlertal, Germany), who maintains a 3.96 grade-point average in her chemistry studies. Alex Morris (Anchorage, AK/Electircal Engineering) and Ray Sabo (Whitehorse, Yukon/Natural Resource Management) had the top GPA for the Alaska men with a 3.95 in their respective fields of study.

Senior John Parry (Whitehorse, Yukon/Anthropology, 3.52) was the lone three-peat on the list for the Blue and Gold, while seniors Einar Often (Tynset, Norway/MBA, 3.62) and Aurelia Korthauer (Bonndorf, Germany/Mechanical engineering, 3.51) earned the honor for the second straight year.

Joining Schnurr, Morris and Sabo on the GNAC All-Academic Team for the first time were Joseph DeWilde (North Pole, AK/Mechanical Engineering, 3.89), Erik Soderstrom (As, Sweden/Geology, 3.81), Ian Wilkinson (Fairbanks, AK/General Studies, 3.64), and Jana Bennedix (Fairbanks, AK/General Studies, 3.93).

To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
