MileSplit50 Boys Indoor 2018

Rank Athlete/Team Comments
1
Until proven otherwise, Bryan Herron is the best high school sprinter in the United States. Patiently waiting for the 400m matchup with Jamal Walton.
2
This was the breakout race I needed to see for Eric Allen! There's never been any doubt that Allen is talented, but he didn't yet have that result to put him on the same level as guys like Herron or Cooper. Big statement for him at the VA Showcase to beat Tyrese Cooper in his runner-up finish in the 300m, which also broke the old national record.
3
Another solid weekend for Kyle Garland who left the VA Showcase with two more event wins.
4
In the highly anticipated 1K matchup at the VA Showcase, Hoey proved that he's the top dog in the mid distance races this season. He beat Hengst and Hasty in what turned out to be a pretty physical race. Hoey also led Bishop Shanahan to a 3rd place US #9 finish in the DMR. Don't forget that his team still holds the US #1 mark in the 4x8 from way back in December.
5
By now, I'm sure everyone has seen Mondo's season opener was invalidated. Still...starting off the season with 19+ is no joke.
6
With Affolder on the anchor, Loudoun Valley ran the 5th fastest indoor DMR in high school history. If they can shave off some more time, he could remarkably break the national record in this event for the second year in a row for two different schools.

Hengst is a guy who races to win. While that didn't happen in the big race, he soloed a US #3 4:13 in the mile on Friday before finishing 2nd to Hoey by less than a second in the 1000m.
9
Hasty was never in a position to win the 1K race at the VA Showcase, fighting in the pack to a third place finish. Brentwood's 3rd place DMR finish at the VA Showcase moves them up to #5 in the country. Two weeks ago, the Oregon commit also ran the US #1 time in the 800m.
10
Last year, Tyrese Cooper raced indoors prior to the VA Showcase. That wasn't the case in 2018. Cooper didn't look comfortable on the banks at Liberty. He finished third in the 300m, and cruised through the 500m after Herron was a no show. His future for the rest of the season is uncertain. Remains to be seen which meets he'll compete in or what distance he'll race.
11
The Illinois sophomore keeps moving closer to the top ten. He's now just one place off after a 21.30 and 6.85 at the Arkansas HS Invite.
12
Charles Lewis is the definition of consistency. More sub-22 200s and sub-7 60s than anyone else this season.
13
Kratz lowers his 300m PR to 33.77 at the VA Showcase.
14
Man I wish he was in the invite 300m at the VA Showcase! Stewart has been progressing well this season and had the best weekend of his career in front of the national audience! He won the 55m just .01s off the national lead. His 33.86 from an early heat in the 300m is still good for US #5, less than .1s off what Kratz ran in the seeded heat. DeMatha Catholic was also third in the 4x2, which now moves them to US #4.
15
Best 60H athlete in the country. Period.
16
Outside of his training partner Brian Herron, no one saw the rise of Nick Ramey coming this season. For the third time, Ramey proved his early fast times were no fluke. He's now top ten in the 300m and second in the 500m behind Tyrese Cooper.
17
Louis posted a nation leading 24-3.25 in the long jump two weeks ago but drops after a third place finish in the long jump at the VA Showcase.

After a 4:15 mile at the Millrose trials, Gatewood came back the next week to run the second fastest 800m of the year. St. Anthony's won the Yale Track classic DMR in 10:10, which ranks them #2 in the US.
23
Ayden Owens fell out of the rankings after weeks of inactivity but he burst back onto the track with a US #2 7.77 in the 60H. He's just .01s shy of breaking 22 in the 200m and long jumped 22-5 on Saturday.

The Michigan indoor season is heating up and Motor City is always producing talented runners. James lowered his 400m PR to 48.20 over the weekend beating James Flournoy by .03s. Motor City has one of the top ranked 4x4s and he moved up to #12 in the 200m with a 21.89.
27
Flournoy has steadily been lowering his times. He's now top 15 in the 200m and #7 in the 400m.
28
Richardson had a decent outing at the VA Showcase, but the times aren't strong enough to stay in the top 15.
29
Uniondale remains top ten in the 4x2 but Borzor suffered a loss in the 300m to an unranked athlete at the New Balance Games.

31
Still hasn't raced indoors, but as the top finisher in Scotland at Great Edinburgh XC, he's shown he remains in great form.
32
The trip to Virginia was a good one for Kevin Snyder. He swept the horizontal jumps with a new US #1 49-9 in the triple jump and took down Donovan Louis in the long jump.
33
Still waiting to see how Fuller will bounce back from his injury at A&M.
34
Davis moves up a few places after jumping well at the VA Showcase.

Noah Green's first Texas meets have ended with mixed results. He's posted a few good times, but been beaten consistently. He was looking good through prelims at Texas Tech this weekend but pulled up and chose not to compete in the finals. The word is that it was just a cramp and they were playing it safe. Hopefully we'll see him back on the track soon.
37
After a difficult race in the 4x2, Ahouman didn't start the 55m finals at the VA Showcase. He barely hangs onto his 6.34 #1 spot in the 55m.
38
Toga makin moves. After his US #1 in the 3200m earlier this month, Weilbaker PRed in the mile with a 4:15 third place finish at the Millrose Trials. Toga also won the New Balance Games DMR in a US #4 10:17.
39
Sholars had a decent season opener at A&M, an off day at Carl Lewis, and then bounced back in a big way at Tech this weekend. His 21.58 winning time in the 200m final is the 5th fastest time on the season and he's real close to breaking 6.9 in the 60m.
40
Causey moves one inch closer to 7' and ties Garland at US #2 .
41
17+ only for KC Lightfoot this season.

Cadena has put together some decent times in the 60m, but will need significant improvement in that event to remain in the top 50 in coming weeks.

48
Back to back weeks with 1:04 500s for McRae.
49
Green Hope holds the second fastest 4x8 time in the country this season. Delgado put together a strong race in the VA Showcase 1K to finish 5th.
50
There probably aren't many people outside of Missouri who have heard of Justin Robinson. You can start paying attention now. In his first ever indoor meet, the sophomore ran 48.08 and 22.15.

EXPLAINING MILESPLIT50:

These are subjective rankings of the top 50 athletes across all indoor track and field events. Feel free to reach out to MileSplit via email (travis.miller@flosports.tv) or on Twitter (@milesplit or @TravisMillerFlo)

Here are the attributes MileSplit considered when ranking athletes (in no particular order):

- IAAF points for ballpark numbers to compare performances across different events

- PRs

- Returning indoor track & field rankings

- Significant wins/results in previous indoor seasons

- More weight on "championship" events (I took stats and performances from ALL events into consideration, but championship events are more important at the national level)

- Participation in relays

- 2018 indoor track & field results

- Indoor competition frequency (these are rankings for indoor track & field, not necessarily the best all around XC/indoor/outdoor athletes)
