TBT: Davis, Williams Dominate 2017 AAU Club Championships

There's no debating Florida's girls sprinters handled their business at the 2017 AAU Club Championships.

Both the 100m and 200m were dominated by the state's females in both the 14 and 15-16 age groups. Tamari Davis, a rising freshman at Gainesville High, and Briana Williams, an emerging sophomore with Chaminade-Madonna, broke AAU Club Championship records in their age groups for those events.

Davis started off by recording the championship's age group mark in the 100m prelims. She ran a comfortable 11.63 seconds in the 100m. In the semifinals (11.91) and finals (11.74), Davis was close to breaking it again.

In the 200m semifinals, Davis broke her second age group mark at Club's by running 23.58 seconds. She had hoped to break that time again in the finals, and she would have if this wind wasn't illegal. Davis ran 23.31 with +2.3 winds.

Williams started her record-breaking week in the semifinals of the 15-16 girls' 100m. She pulled away from the field, looking very composed in 11.70 seconds to set a 100m age group record at the Club championships.

In the semifinal, she ran 23.92 seconds and followed in the 100m final with a time of 11.54 seconds.

Flrunners contributor Denise Spann caught up with Davis after her performances and although the wind prevented the youngster from coming away with the perfect times she had envisioned, she was still pleased with bringing back two gold medals.

Moments later she won her second title and another meet record. Williams broke Symone Mason's record with a time of 23.56, just three one-hundredths shy of her personal best and US#5 time of 23.53s.
