Fayetteville Our Lady of Mercy (Ga.) High graduate and University of Tennessee junior Christian Coleman made history on Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, blowing past the previous 100m record by producing a time of 9.82 seconds during in semifinal action.

Coleman will move on to the finals on Friday at Hayward Field.

Coleman ran his split in the first heat of the semifinals and the mark makes him the fourth fastest American in the history of the event. Only Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, and Maurice Greene have run faster marks. Coleman, who is just a junior in college, also recorded a world lead.

Coleman's performance follows a series of breakthrough victories in 2017. At the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, Coleman tied the collegiate record in the 60m sprint with a 6.45 victory, which matched Leonard Myles-Mills' time set in 1999. He also won the 200m in 20.11, which nearly broke Wallace Spearmon's NCAA record of 20.10. He became the first man to sweep the 60m and 200m at the NCAA Indoor Championships since Justin Gatlin accomplished the feat in 2002.

Coleman's career best in high school came at Brooks PR in 2014 when he ran 10.29 seconds, setting a new record at the event.

Coleman's career best over the high school season -- he went to a private school -- was 10.38 seconds at the Class A Area 3 Private Championships.
